The idea of providing accommodation to our Morgan customers came about as a discussion topic many years ago when we sometimes struggled to get them booked into local hotels or B & B’s, especially when they appeared without any forward notice. We were expanding the Morgan sports car business and needed more showroom and storage space for clients cars. The provision of adding accommodation to the building helped make the whole project viable. Plans were drawn up and submitted to the District Council in 2000 but despite lengthy discussions and negotiations, they decided to refuse the application. An appeal was set in motion, with success at the end of 2001 meant that we could start the more detailed construction drawings and plan how it was going to be built.
Melvyn decided to project manage and detail design it himself, thereby containing costs and ensuring the work was carried out to his very exacting standards. The three years and ten month building project has been completed in 2009 with decisions on every aspect of the design and interiors, along with the colour schemes being jointly agreed between Melvyn & his wife Sindy. As you will be able to see when you visit, or indeed see the construction images on this web site, this was no easy task. There was a stream 2 metres from the boundary and a basement to be constructed, even before the walls went up. Trawling through web sites, various construction processes and design detail became a regular way of life in the Rutter household.
The finished result is testimony to all the hard work and effort that all parties and suppliers involved in this project have gone to in providing probably the most unique accommodation experience in this country, if not the world. We welcome anyone who would like to sample this amazing place, just for a night or maybe more. As one customer said to us, “the problem you are going to have here Melvyn is that people will come and stay, they will not want to leave !”
